MISSION STATEMENT
The ESM Bourgogne-Franche-Comté's identity is built around the common music experience, the interdisciplinary aspects of musical aesthetics, creation, learning and musicology. We share this strong and creative identity on an international scale.
The ESM Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is a member of the European Association of Conservatories (AEC) and participates in the different actions of this network (conferences, seminars for the European Platform of Research in Music - EPARM, etc.). In participating in different activities, the ESM is able to forge special relationships with other European university-level conservatories. As an AEC member, the ESM is also involved with the work of the European Music Council (EMC).
Created in 2009, the ESM Bourgogne-Franche-Comté received its first Erasmus charter in 2010 and since then has been carrying out collaborative projects and enabling students and professors to go abroad. Today, the ESM is also able to draw on its experience gained in Dijon through numerous study abroad exchanges over the last few years via the Regional Conservatory of Dijon (Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Dijon) as well as its longstanding partnerships with European university-level music institutions (especially with Mainz, a German city in the Rhineland-Palatinate state, which has a sister city relationship with the region of Burgundy).
A longstanding connection with the University of Burgundy: the ESM Bourgogne-Franche-Comté has an agreement with the University of Burgundy and in particular for the issuing of the "Pratique musicale spécialisée" bachelor's degree (a music degree with specialization). Every year, 10% of its student body is made up of foreign students. The University of Burgundy is our connection to universities abroad.
The ESM Bourgogne-Franche-Comté selects its partners based on several different key areas:
- artistic and educational: a complementarity and balance of these two aspects in our courses at the ESM Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
- geographical: because of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté's geographical location, the ESM deals primarily with southern and eastern European countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Romania) as well as Great Britain and Iceland.
- regional development: by supporting twinning projects with regional authorities of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. The region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is twinned with the Rhineland-Palatinate state in Germany, which enables the development of a strong and enduring relationship between the cities of Dijon and Mainz. Dijon also has other sister cities in Europe which have allowed for the creation of institutional agreements, as is the case for Cluj in Romania.
- ESM's objective is to keep developing these established partnerships - Pecs (Hungry), Reggio nell'Emilia (Italy), Opole (Poland) and York (Great Britain) - in order to create a new dialog with university-level music institutions.
The most important target groups for the study abroad program at the ESM Bourgogne-Franche-Comté are:
- Students; so that they meet and interact with other cultures and ways of life while studying and strengthen their European identity via study abroad programs ranging from three months to two semesters;
- Professors; in order to participate in conferences, seminars, master classes and concerts via short-term business trips abroad ranging from one day to six weeks;
- University administration, so that they can learn how to collaborate and work together as well as test new methods and find new ways of working together.
From 2014-2020 the ESM Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is an ERASMUS+ charter holder.
